The 130 puppy mill dogs I mentioned earlier? Our chances of getting one are close to nil now. THREE HUNDRED people lined up this morning in front of the Broward county shelter and more filtered in throughout the day. Four and six families at a time were trying to adopt the same dog!
Karen Noltion, of Pompano Beach, was the first to sign up to adopt a miniature pinscher she planned to name Peewee. He’s 4 years old, with an eye infection and a hematoma on his ear, but Noltion didn’t care. She just wanted a dog to love, she said, even after shelter workers warned her that Peewee — like the other rescued pups — was not housebroken and might have trouble adjusting to people because of lack of socialization at the Tennessee breeding farm.
Don’t get me wrong; this is wonderful! But I have to ask… where the hell have these people been? There are always healthy dogs and cats in the shelter that need a home… but suddenly the cache of a notorious puppy mill brings in people who don’t care what the hell they walk out with.
I think I’ll wait a few weeks and see who returns what because they can’t deal with fluffy’s ‘issues’… or take Diane Lade’s advice. The main shelter isn’t the only option available to adopters.
Yeah, I know what it sounds like, but we were already talking about adopting…

you have the banana man too!!

I hear ya! The time to adopt is every day. Not when there’s a big story, but when the animals are sitting alone in a kennel at the pound. Those faces are just as sweet and need just as much love as any other.
