I knew about mysafefloridahome, but thought my home wasn’t included because we live in a townhouse, not a single family. but I’m going to ask my insurance agent to see if I can get a refund.

The more I think about it the more I feel steered by my agent. The inspector told me that the agent had set him up in that business. Also, the agent introduced him by saying ‘the inspector we work with’…
But his name isn’t listed among the approved contractors at MySafeFlorida! Hmmm…
When I called for a copy of the report -which MSF says is ours, after all, we paid for it!- he told me that he’d ‘ask the agent to mail us a copy’ like it’s not even his business.
I KNOW they’re getting a kickback.
Now I have to calm down enough to be able to discuss this rationally with them…

I was talking to my roofer yesterday and he seemed surprised by what had happened. When I told him my concerns about the agent working a wheeze with this kid, he looked at me and said “sometimes you just need to scare people. Tell them that you’re calling Broward county licensing services”.

In California, it works if he is an employee and is not presenting himself as the contractor or acting in other than an employee capacity.
However, I am now wondering why people are charging for inspections that are offered for free. It’s probably not illegal as many types of buildings don’t qualify anyway, so they can probably charge for your inspection if you’re willing to pay. What IS an issue with me is why your insurance agent is telling you to hire someone when they know damned well you could have got it for free. I would call them today, lay out your concerns and see if they have a reasonable response. If they can’t give you a reason why you can’t get a free inspection, then unload and demand to be reimbursed.
