Last night at roughly 10:00pm Arthur lost a 1mg Chantix as he was popping it from the blister pack. He heard it hit the floor, but Bree, who was standing next to him, got to it before he did. She must have, because she was there, it’s her M.O. and after an exhaustive search we did not recover it.
A cursory search of the net revealed nothing, so I rang my local Veterinary E.R., who told me to call the ASPCA’s Poison Control Hotline at: 1-888-426-4435. Once the vet at Poison Control gave me a case number and instructions, I could then bring her into the E.R. if needed. The E.R. docs could reference the case number and follow Poison Control’s instructions.
For the uninitiated, it costs $60 to call Poison Control and get advice. Considering the fact that they’re manning the phones 24/7 and you get to speak with a vet, I’m more than okay with it… that’s how they keep the service up and running, and it can be invaluable.
The vet told me that Bree should be fine and there would be no lasting aftereffects, i.e. kidney or liver damage. The worst that should happen was a bit of vomiting or diarrhea. If that occurred I was to keep food and water from her for a few hours, until her tummy calmed down.
Seeing as it was late, we just went to bed. She was fine and only woke me up once at 2:30a to go out.
For anyone finding this: Bree is a 50lb adult dog and the information I received should not necessarily be applied to any other dog, especially puppies.

Hope she is feeling perky today.

That is she okay. The best thing I learned from this post is that there is an ASPCA poison hotline. I had no idea and I am sure it will come in handy for me someday.
Geez Pam, that would have scared the hell out of me like I’m sure it did you. Glad Bree is back up and…running.
for Bree

Of course she was there…
Tell Arthur to pop the pill out onto a dishtowel (or bathroom towel depending on where he keeps it) on a counter. That way it will land on the soft non-bouncy towel and not go jumping…
