These siblings showed up in the yard yesterday. Part of a flock of 8, they now travel together almost exclusively. Please don’t tell me that they will mate.
Two weeks ago they were still covered in fluffy down, yet soon they’ll just be another couple of nasty, smelly, pooping, grown up ducks that I chase off… but for now they’re still babies and I love them.
I’m just evil.

I love the babies! A condo we had overlooked a pond and when the Momma’s started having babies, I learned how to mimic their call. They’d come across the pond to me (Momma & babies) and get yummy oats or bread crumbs to fatten them up.
However, after a couple of months…they knew me by site, babies especially and would follow me. They even learned to knock at the door! Cute little buggers!
Oh, they are cute. And when it comes to food, they get really smart. But just like kittens, once they’re grown they’re not cuddly anymore.

I did get to where they would eat out of my hand and let me touch them and pick them up. Momma kept a watchful eye on the last one, but after I chased a snapping turtle away from the babies, I think she realized I was okay.
Oh they’re so cute when they’re little! You just want to squish their little faces! That’s what I keep telling Darla when she misbehaves, “You’re lucky you’re cute!”

But that’s the way it goes, huh? One day, you’re cute and fluffy and downy and served with the best china and everyone adores you and has to take your picture. The next day, you’re an ugly smelly pooping goose who has to be chased away because you honk too loud and want to bang your brother. Sigh. Such is life.
