Broward county will cut 100 million dollars worth of services because we, The People, received token property tax relief. I say token because we personally saw a decrease of about $100.

Under duress and at risk of great personal gain in the polls, Charlie Crist and the Florida Legislature gave us tax relief. In exchange, we get to lose civil services.

A list of proposed cuts:

Police
Parks
Libraries
Baby Sea Turtle protection
Reef protection
Broward Beautiful
A program that licenses tree trimmers
Hazardous material inspection
Mosquito control
Consumer affairs [fraud]
Development plan review
Crime prevention programs

In other Florida news, my Mayor is one of those spearheading South Florida’s secession from North Florida.

“This is South Florida’s Boston Tea Party,” said Margate Mayor, Pam Donovan.

I’ve emailed her a few times and she’s a lovely person, always ready to help if possible. A split between north and south would keep more of our resources here… but… North and South Florida? Two Floridas might be one too many.

‘What should South Florida’s official language be?’ Poll from the Sun Sentinel. At least some people have their priorities in order!
