Governor Charlie Crist promises to sign the new guns-to-work bill when it crosses his desk, saying that the “2nd Amendment is very important… …people being protected is most important to me.”

The law, fresh from a Senate victory, will bar employers from banning guns on their premises, provided workers hold concealed-weapons permits and leave the guns locked in their cars. People with carry permits already tote their firearms around with them; this just legalizes it… unless a permit holder happens to work for a business in the aerospace or defense industry, a nuclear-power plant, a school or prison. Those places can still ban firearms on their property.

We all know which side of the fight the Sun-Sentinel comes down on:

The Republican-led state Senate handed a major election-year victory Wednesday to the National Rifle Association by approving a measure allowing some 500,000 Floridians with concealed-weapons permits to carry their guns to work.

No, I’d say the people of Florida won a victory.

Though some say it’s too much and others argue it’s not enough, it’s a step… and I’d rather see a step forward than one -or more- backward. If a Democrat wins the White House this November, look for several steps to reverse in the near future.
