Another reason Microsoft is evil. WTH? If I didn’t know so much about Windows and not so comfortable I’d move to Linux or even worse…. A Mac.

*sigh* As always - whenever there is a service pack release - it’s best to wait until they work the bugs out of it. For that matter - it’s best to wait until after a couple of SP’s - then the OS isn’t quite in the beta stages anymore.

My computer has THREE “desktop environments,” each on it’s own removable-tray hard drive. The one that still does MOST of the work is the XP system, as evidenced by the dust in the fan grille. The next most used system is an OpenSuSE 10.3 x64 desktop environment with Compwiz/Beryl installed for “WOW” effects. Sweet. Unfortunately, there are Windows programs I like to use that don’t run under Wine very well… Like Adobe CS3.

Finally, I have my Vista environment. Every time I try running the damned thing, stuff gets screwed-up! It tweaks my system clock to confuzzle XP and Linux when I swap back. Of course my scanner/printer all-in-one device that DOESN’T WORK WITH VISTA loses its browser-based settings if I forget to unplug it from the USB hub before launching Vista… FORGET the HP flatbed scanner. Microsoft’s advice? Buy a newer scanner! (But it works GREAT with XP! WTH?)

For the first time in MONTHS, I’ve put the $299 boxed-malware system in the drive tray to download and try Vista SP1…

It LOOKS like it works. Oops, hold that thought… Nope, AIO device is toast. Clock is still wonky. Oh, but LOOK! Something NEW!!

MS Office 2003 is now TOAST and will no longer launch. It’s claiming a validation error, but when I visit the Microsquish Upchuck site, it tells me that it wants to install Office patches, then sets fire to my living room. (Okay, I made the flaming sofa part up… But Office WON’T PATCH and it WON’T RUN.

**sigh**

I’ll re-install Office some other time. My Vista drive is going back on the shelf - probably until I need to re-format it for Ubuntu or whatever else!

As I was accepting my new job and filling out paperwork, the IT tech came in and gifted my desk with a new PC, replete with Vista.

I was sorely tempted to back out of the job offer. After working with it for a few days, I can safely say I hate it. New job and new software = inability to accomplish anything with alacrity. Gah!
