My new PC came in yesterday afternoon, and lemme tell ya [as if you didn't already know], Vista is wonky. Before I bought it people told me that I’d have trouble finding stuff, that’s it’s so different. It’s not; everything is pretty much where it’s always been, it’s the GUI that’s changed.

The wonky part comes in with the little things, like when I plug in the external USB hard drive that I’ve backed my stuff up on and it can’t find a driver for it. At that point, and for all sorts of little details, I’m having to install ‘updates’ from Microsoft.

I dutifully saved my Firefox bookmarks and followed every step at Mozillazine for restoring them, but no joy. What a pain in the ass, since I’ve collected roughly 500 bookmarks! LOL! Oh, well… maybe it needed trimming.

I’m really not grooving on this 22″ widescreen monitor. Arthur wants it, bad. He might get it. I’m not a fan of LCDs to begin with, preferring the clarity of the CRTs. Plays movies very well, but… I may swap with him for his 21″ CRT. The widescreen is great because I have multiple things going, but…

Oh, and what’s up with Microsoft’s Google integration? IE came with the damn Google toolbar installed, and Google desktop running!

I’ve got a lot of restoring to do, so better get going. And yes, I am excited! Can’t wait to see the Sims on this sucker!!!!!

The people who have the most trouble with it are people who have older applications (especially work related that can’t be changed) that won’t work on Vista.

Other complaints I’ve seen are from people who have used earlier Windows OS’s without problem, but things they do on a regular basis are set up differently and it really throws them.

Last of all is the driver issue for externals which was very problematic when Vista first came out. There are more drivers now, but it was amazing how few there were in the beginning… One would think they might have gone to their legacy database of drivers and created those for Vista - but such was not the case!!! This just blew me away… so we’re supposed to buy the computer and all new peripherals too??? ARG!!!

I’ve had to get updated drivers for nearly everything… and even though I got new drivers from Canon’s site, I still can’t install the Easy print program that came with the dang thing!

Only thing I haven’t had trouble installing so far has been the Creative Zen MP3 player software. LOL!

I saved my Thunderbird profile but can’t seem to get it to see it… so my mail might be lost. I’m going to Outlook, anyway.

Tip to anyone else doing this: be sure to keep IE as your default browser until everything is sorted out. The 2nd thing I did was load Firefox, and set it to default. Ya know, after the antivirus!

Ours came up with the Yahoo toolbar installed. I’ve uninstalled the silly thing twice and it comes back every time the machine gets rebooted.
It took me twenty minutes to find the damn utility for toning down the graphics for performance.
It seems that every iteration of Windows they intentionally move things just to jack with us.!!!!
When I get some time I’ll researcg the reg hacks needed to turn some of Vista’s silliness off.
For example, “A process is trying to run on this computer. Do you want this to happen?”
Every time they try to dumb Windows down more it gets more aggravating to use.
