Pam: [YsD's ankle is] still swollen and painful, and the bruising is horrible..

I’m not a physician, but don’t rule out a severe sprain yet. I did a job on one of my ankles years back — your description (and the memory) has me whimpering on YsD’s behalf — and after a week of agony I now felt so certain I’d broken it, I finally went to the doctor.

After Xrays and such he confirmed my initial diagosis saying it would have been better if I’d broken “the damned thing.”

He said it wouldn’t hurt as much and would heal faster, too, if I had.

I don’t remember any burning sensation, probably because I was in too much pain to be able to remember anything else. If it IS a sprain like the one I had, I had to wear a “boot” initially to kept me from bending the ankle at all — me on crutches is a disaster in the making — then a progression to the substitution of two-tons of Ace bandages. (It wasn’t really two tons, but it felt that way.) Then, finally, a single wrap.
