His politics aside, I love Johnny Depp. He’s such a gifted actor, whether playing Edward Scissorhands or Jack Sparrow. So I was happy to see that he’ll be back on the big screen soon in Sweeney Todd! For info on the flick, you can vist Sweeney Todd on MySpace or visit the official Sweeney Todd movie site, which is as dark and menacing as the movie promises to be.
The ‘Demon Barber of Fleet Street’, Depp plays opposite such notable actors as Helena Bonham Carter and Alan Rickman in Tim Burton’s adaptation of the hit Broadway musical Sweeney Todd, which is in turn based upon a 19th century legend.
The movie tells the infamous story of Benjamin Barker, who lives a quiet life with his wife Lucy and daughter Johanna until the lustful Judge Turpin has been deported to Australia with the help of sailor Anthony Hope. Many years later he returns under the pseudonym Sweeney Todd to set up a barber shop in Victorian London, situated above Mrs. Lovett’s Meat Pie Shop were she sells “the worst pies in London.” With the help of Mrs. Lovett, Todd tries to extract his revenge on all the people who have ever wronged and hopes to be reunited with his daughter, Joanna, who is by that time Judge Turpin’s ward. The sinister partnership with Mrs. Lovett.
Filmed in Buckinghamshire, England, the film has what has arguably been called cinema’s best revenge scene. I say arguably, because no one will forget “My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”
Dark, yet colorful. And you get to hear Johnny Depp sing. What could be better?

You think Johnny Depp’s politics is bad? Sheesh…Alan Rickman’s is 100 times worse, and I think he’s just as talented as Johnny Depp, if not more so.
He’s one of my favorites, except that he is 100 percent anti-Israel, which doesn’t fly in my book, because anti-Israel, to me = pro-Hamas/terrorist.
I would like to see the movie, though, nonetheless.
