Quality Weenie gave me much to read about in the comments of my ‘Dog Whisperer on Speed Dial’ post! Cesar fans, one link brings up even more links to follow; there is a veritable cornucopia of Cesar hate out there! I had absolutely no idea; I thought he had a plan and it worked. Period. Well, it seems to on t.v., anyway.
I’ve been in dog training classes before as well as used some of Cesar’s methods. One of them I simply cannot bring myself to do is the ‘flooding’, where he takes a dog who is phobic about something and immerses them in it and tells them [basically] ‘get used to it - NOW’. That just seems cruel to me, which is why I haven’t taken Bree to the airport.
Good links, though, check ‘em out if you want to know more about his ‘black and white’ training methods.
Speaking of Bree, we just returned from the dog park and Pet Supermarket. The doggy market was fine; she loves that place and pretty much clapped her front paws together with glee when she realized we were going in! The dog park… not so much. Again, she acted like she was terrified, though not as much as last time. We were there for TWO HOURS and though she did ramble around in a larger circle from me than last time, she still did not play with any dogs. It took some time before she would even let one smell her butt. I was deeply embarrassed.
When two greyhounds came in she actually showed an interest and took up with one of them for a bit, until it went too far off. Weird! The guy I was talking to said that it’s probably because they look similar. I thought of Lance & Maggie…! These guys were just a tad bigger than they are.
Fortunately I took up with a retired Marine and we talked politics nearly the entire time! He says he’s there pretty much every day, so I’m going back next week for both Bree’s benefit as well as my own.

Yes, many people really hate Cesar and his methods. Mostly they are people who don’t understand dogs as well as he does. Plus you always have people who are jealous.
One problem with Cesar’s show is that it can only (by necessity) show you very little of what must be done. He is able to perform his miracles on the dogs, but it’s the people training that takes so very long to do. Most of us don’t instinctively know all the variances of a dog’s body language - it’s a tough language to learn.
I enjoy his show though.
