…but there’s a Democrat with some logic and intelligence!

California Senator Jenny Oropeza has come out in opposition to Assemblyman Lloyd Levine’s AB 1634, called the California Healthy Pets Act, which would require that every dog and cat be neutered.

“I oppose (Assembly Bill) 1634,” the Long Beach Democrat said in a written statement. “It is too severe a solution to a noble objective. Further, I am concerned about the economic consequences for the city of Long Beach’s convention business. It will hurt public safety and other vital city services.”

The bill includes several exceptions, including show animals, police dogs and guide dogs and animals that are too old or ill to be spayed or neutered.

Kudos to Senator Oropeza.

Just for balance: PetPAC.net.

I agree that it’s nonsense for a civilized society to kill thousands of animals a year. But that’s a band-aid for people who don’t act responsibly. Again, government steps in and makes sure we act as responsible grown ups!

From PetPAC’s FAQ:

AB 1634 will require all dogs and cats in California to be spayed or neutered at 4 months of age unless they are registered purebreds and have special, government-issued permits.
You can only get a permit if you can prove you’re a licensed breeder, or if your pet is a valid purebred and has been in at least one legitimate show or is in training.

“…unless they are registered purebreds…” Registered with whom? The AKC or one of the many other registries?? Has Cali cut a deal with the AKC?

ALSO, a puppy is too young to be shown in an AKC show and too young for agility training… Obedience, I have no clue. It could be enrolled in generic puppy classes…?

ALSO, there are many who consider 4 months too young to alter. Something to do with growth and hormones; I myself am not a vet.

Spare me your special government issued permits. This sounds suspiciously like a bill co-sponsored by puppy mills, who will be glad to pay the fees of roughly $100 per animal, and beat down the REAL breeder, the hobby breeder, who doesn’t make money on their dogs to begin with and certainly won’t be able to afford the extra fees and permits.

This is a slippery slope!
