Miami-Dade county commissioner Barbara Jordan wants to ban the use of the ‘n-word’ in the county and plans to introduce a resolution to that end today.

“That word was designed to be cruel (and) to hurt,” Commissioner Barbara Jordan said Tuesday.
“We need to take it away,” Jordan said. “We need to take it off our lips. We need to take it from the community and anytime we meet somebody on the street that may casually use the word, we need to let them know that’s not OK.”

Ms. Jordan would know better than I what negative connotations the word carries… or doesn’t. Being white there’s no way the word would pass my lips, though I hear it each day as young people walk by my house. It seems to be a part of modern slang, as the kids use it with each other regularly, and very easily. The word may wound older people but this latest generation seem to be changing that, at least within their own race. It’s still off limits to us ‘whiteys’.

According to Wikipedia, the ‘n-word’ [now I just feel silly writing a word that way] evolved from the Latin niger, meaning black, and did not always carry a negative connotation. It was one of many to describe people of color, or all people of disadvantage. I’ve heard it used when describing poor white trash.

There are quite a few websites dedicated to banning the word, but English is a living language, and as long as they make it such an issue, and give it that much power over them, it will continue to be propagated.

Even homophones are on the verge of being considered profane. Aide to Washington D.C. mayor Anthony Williams, David Howard used the word ‘niggardly’ in reference to a budget. Idiots everywhere revolted and he resigned [though later accepting a different position with the Mayor].

Did we ban ‘Hitler’ or ‘Nazi’ or any other distasteful word? No, because we need to remember. But we grow away from the negativity and see them for what they truly are: just words that define. Well, if you want to define yourself by one, go right ahead.

The kids in my ‘hood will be relieved to know that if the measure passes there will be no actual charges for their continued use of the ‘n-word’.
