Last updated 05.11.07 ASPCA Pet Food Recall List
The managers of the two Chinese companies implicated in the recall have been arrested.

Tainted pet food has been fed to pigs, chickens and farm raised FISH.

Now a Chicago company is involved in the recalls.
Cereal Byproducts Co., which has plants in five states and a headquarters in Mt. Prospect, issued a recall for the rice protein products on May 4. The company’s products went to three pet food manufacturers.
They refuse to name the 3 manufacturers, instead pointing to the website erected to ‘explain’ the recall.

MUCH MORE —->
Reportedly 45 Californians consumed pork products from hogs who were fed poisoned pet food, but the FDA isn’t worried: “At this time, we have no evidence of harm to humans associated with the processed pork product.â€
Well, they didn’t eat tainted hog, did they?
Harmony Farms has been added to the recall list, but as of yet there is nothing on their website.
Canine Caviar has recalled 1,500 cans of their turkey and beaver foods, stating: “…our canned food co-packer was using ingredients that were not authorized by Canine Caviar.”
Hat tip to QW for the Blue Buffalo information!
Blue Buffalo’s manufacturer of canned dog and cat food, American Nutrition, informed them that they had been adding rice protein concentrate to Blue Buffalo foods without their knowledge or consent.
Mulligan Stew Pet Food is also denying prior knowledge of the ingredients of their foods manufactured at AMI.
American Nutrition of Ogden, Utah, the manufacturer of Mulligan Stew Pet Food, has notified our company of the addition of rice protein into Mulligan Stew Chicken and Turkey flavors. American Nutrition’s introduction of rice protein into Mulligan Stew Chicken and Turkey flavors was in direct violation of our patented formula and was done without our knowledge or consent.
Natural Balance [Dick Van Patten] is now claiming ignorance as well…
“American Nutrition continued by telling us that they added this ingredient to four of our canned products without our knowledge or consent.”
Where was quality control for these companies?

Diamond Pet Foods has recalled 3 products: Diamond Lamb & Rice Formula for Dogs 13 oz. cans, Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul Kitten Formula 5.5 oz. cans, and Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul Puppy Formula 13 oz. cans.
These were manufactured by American Nutrition against the knowledge of Diamond.
Dr. Foster & Smith has recalled the following dry foods: Chicken & Brown Rice Adult Lite Dog food, Chicken & Brown Rice Adult Lite Cat food, Lick Your Chops Lamb Meal, Rice & Egg Cat food and Bulk Chicken & Brown Rice Adult Lite Dog food sold to SmartPak in a 2000 lbs. tote on Feb 9, 2007.
Roughly 6,000 hogs in 7 states will be slaughtered as a result of eating tainted food.
The FDA searched a Kansas pet food plant operated by Menu and the Nevada offices of supplier ChemNutra.

Contaminated pet food has been fed to hogs in at least five states: California, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Utah and possibly Ohio.
Contaminated food was also sent to one chicken farm in Missouri.

Another company is suspected of importing rice protein from China.
“We have learned that in addition to Wilbur-Ellis, a second United States company imported a shipment of rice protein from China that is also likely to be contaminated with melamine,” the senators wrote. “We request the FDA identify this second importer as well as those manufacturers to which it may have sold the contaminated product.”
This is probably one of the few times I’ll agree with Democrats, but I think there’s a lot we are not being told for fear of a major panic.
Could just be me, though.

Melamine in Hog feed found to be from tainted dog food:
A California hog farm is under quarantine after testing showed the hog’s feed was contaminated with the same chemical as the recalled pet food.
Tests are positive for the presence of melamine in the hog’s urine and feed at The American Hog Farm in Ceres, near Modesto.
Officials believe some of the recalled pet food was resold to the hog farm as salvage feed.
Anyone still think humans aren’t at risk?

Rice gluten, wheat gluten… and corn gluten?

The pet food recall has expanded once again to include Dick Van Patten’s Natural Balance Venison and brown rice and Venison and green pea.
The recalled products include Venison and Brown Rice canned and bagged dog foods, Venison and Brown Rice dog treats, and Venison and Green Pea dry cat food. Recent laboratory results show that the products contain melamine. We believe the source of the melamine is a rice protein concentrate. Natural Balance has confirmed this morning that some production batches of these products may contain melamine.
The recall was prompted by consumer complaints received by Natural Balance involving a small number of cats and dogs that developed kidney failure after eating the affected product.
This, added to the menu foods -which expanded recently to include such foods as some Hill’s Prescription Diet, Sunshine & Del Monte…
This is the scary part:
The source of the melamine appears to be a rice protein concentrate, which was recently added to the dry venison formulas. Natural Balance does not use wheat gluten, which was associated with the previous melamine contamination.
The FDA has blocked Chinese imports of wheat gluten because that was deemed the culprit in the Menu recall, but what is the source of the Natural Balance rice, and why would they use one batch of brown rice in one product, and not in another? Natural Balance is ‘proud of the source’ of their ingredients, including the rice, and though I don’t use this food I would very much like to know what facility it’s been through.
AND, if it is rice, why is there none of it in the dry Venison and green pea cat food?
The FDA has a full list of the foods and companies involved, updated today.
FOX NEWS is reporting that the tainted rice came from China as well as the wheat gluten.
The chemical, melamine, is believed to have contaminated rice protein concentrate used to make a variety of Natural Balance Pet Foods products for both dogs and cats, the Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday.
Both ingredients were imported from China, though by different companies and from different manufacturers.
The FDA has there is no evidence so far to suggest any of the rice protein went to companies that make human food, said Michael Rogers, director of the agency’s division of field investigations. But the FDA has not accounted for all the imported ingredient.
Previously, the chemical was found to contaminate wheat gluten used by at least six other pet food and treat manufacturers.
Where’s the rest of the rice?

Maybe you need to switch to a food that isn’t distributed by menu foods. They seem to be having issues lately. *sigh*
One thing that doesn’t surprise me is that they change ingredients. I KNOW they did that with several foods Sam was eating over the years. I started out feeding her Iams, changed to one of the others at one point because she was having itching problems, then the last food she was on was Science Diet…
I knew every time something changed in the formulation because Sam would react. *sigh* Guess I should have gone with Purina… their test farm in right outside St. Louis. I don’t know if they change ingredients like that - but it would be worth a shot.
